The Skeaping Statues

We have recently taken delivery of three statues by John Skeaping who was the first husband of Barbara Hepworth.

The three statues of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Nicholas are on loan from Kings College, Cambridge and have not been seen in public for the best part of 50 years. They were discovered a few months ago in a barn on the property of the college which they were looking to redevelop.

They started life in the college chapel and later went on display in Lincoln Cathedral. They returned to Cambridge in the 1960's where the trail went cold until a few months ago. The Castleford Link with John Skeaping goes deep as there is a Skeaping mural on the wall of the nursery next to Three Lane Ends Academy. There is a deep connection in the area as Henry Moore, a contemporary, was baptised at Hightown Church.
